SCVHS Announces Project to Digitize The Surface Creek Champion - Funding Needed!
Paper, type-setting, ink, printing presses, news stories, local reporting, writing, and editing. That’s what it took from 1904 to 1943 for C. W. Brewer to produce The Surface Creek Champion, a weekly newspaper covering all the news and action in the Surface Creek Valley.
Scanners, optical character recognition, digital readers, IT experts, virtual museums, donors, and money for conversion. That’s what it will take in 2019 to bring The Surface Creek Champion into the digital age.
SCVHS has 40 years of The Champion. Much of it is on microfilm. But some editions are in bound volumes of original newspapers. The question is how to get the microfilm and bound editions into a modern, searchable format that is universally available.
Enter the Colorado State Library’s Virtual Library and its collection of Colorado Historic Newspapers. It, together with the Cedaredge Public Library and SCVHS has committed to digitizing the entire collection of Surface Creek Champion editions.
This will be a boon to researchers of Surface Creek Valley history. Hitherto, a researcher scanned through rolls of microfilm or leafed through pages of bound newspapers. Assuming said researcher knew a proximate date for the story the search might eventually locate the item of interest. The researcher would have to be situated in front of the microfilm reader or bound volume. With a digital copy, the researcher can be anywhere there is internet access and can ask the system to look for searchable dates, or names, words, or phrases, thereby locating the desired item quickly or learning just as quickly the item simply wasn’t covered by the newspaper. If found, the item can be downloaded for filing on the researcher’s computer or printed on the researcher’s printer.
SCVHS has submitted a grant request for funding to support the project. Cost estimate for the project is $13,223. The grant is for matching funds which are limited to $1500 for digitization and $1000 for support. That means SCVHS will need to raise close to $11000 to complete the project.
C. W. Brewer descendants have granted copyright permission for the project. Digitization will begin with the microfilm rolls and use bound paper copies for editions that might be missing from the rolls.
Those wishing to provide financial support for the project can make contributions to The Surface Creek Valley Historical Society, Inc. (SCVHS) specifying the funds are designated for The Surface Creek Champion.
