Surface Creek Creamery
The next building has been furnished and set up by the Uhlan Austin family with old equipment from the Surface Creek Creamery. The plant was housed in a converted fruit packing
house on the highway in Eckert. It served the public from 1930 until 1977. Those who brought in the cream from surrounding farms
were paid by
the percentage of butterfat in their cream, Challenge Butter, made here, regularly took first place in many of the semi-annual convention competitions. The Pioneer Town display
features cream separators, a cooler, cream tester, and a wooden churn...a first at the original creamery. Photos of early employees and of a Challenge
truck are arranged on the walls. A shelf displays a collection of glass milk bottles.
