Pioneer Monument
Pioneer Monument in Pioneer Town pays tribute to the accomplishments of early settlers in Delta County. “It started with a small group, an idea, a small purse,”
commented Karla Church, Captain of the Columbine Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP) at the
dedication of the monument on May 5, 2000.
An estimated 11 tons of marble make up the two piece monument. The site chosen is near the fence line at the southeast corner of Pioneer Town. Here the monument is
clearly visible from Highway 65, the white marble contrasting sharply with nearby evergreens.
The plaque reads: “During the years of 1881-1900 many pioneers entered the Surface Creek Valley. As these pioneers entered this part of the Western Slope they set
the stage for the development of the communities located in present day Delta County. Pioneer families who settled this area emigrated from Utah, other parts of the United States,
and many foreign countries. These courageous men, women and children planted crops and fruit trees, brought in livestock, discovered and mined coal, and developed the
water systems from Grand Mesa. With their foresight, strength and courage they contributed in many ways to make this area a wonderful place to live. Many have gained from
the efforts of these early pioneers.
Honoring of the Pioneers of Delta County with the erection of this monument is a privilege. Erected by Daughters of Utah Pioneers.”
PIONEER TOWN HISTORY
Colby Store & Post Office
Every building in Cedaredge’s Pioneer Town has a long and storied past. The Colby General Store reminds us of the importance these small stores played in offering supplies to rural communities. This was the first building to join the three unique landmark silos at the site.
